The Undercut and Overcut, Explained

Two cars, nose to tail, neither able to pass on track. The overtake happens anyway — in the pit lane, decided by a single lap and a few tenths of tyre offset. That's the undercut, and its mirror image the overcut. They are the most important overtaking moves in modern Formula 1, and almost none of it happens where the cameras are pointed.

Both moves exist because passing on track is hard. When two cars are evenly matched, the one behind can sit in range for lap after lap without ever getting close enough to commit. Strategy is the way out: instead of trying to drive past, you pit at the right moment and let fresh tyres and clear air do the overtaking for you. What is pit loss?

A pit stop is not just the two-odd seconds the car sits still. The real number is pit loss: the total time a car gives up by pitting versus staying out and completing a normal lap. It's the sum of the slow-down from the pit-entry line, the speed-limited run down the pit lane (60 or 80 km/h depending on the circuit), the stationary time while the crew works, and the acceleration back up to speed on exit. Add it up and pit loss is typically somewhere between 20 and 30 seconds, and it varies a lot by track — a long pit lane like Monaco or Melbourne is punishing, a short one is cheap.

The stationary time is the part everyone watches — a good stop is comfortably under 2.5 seconds, the very fastest under two — but it's a small slice of the total. A crew that loses a second fumbling a wheel gun hurts, yet the pit-lane transit dwarfs it. Keep both numbers in mind: the stationary time is execution, the pit loss is strategy.

How does the undercut work?

The undercut is the aggressive move: you pit before the car you're chasing. On fresh tyres your first flying lap — the out-lap — is already faster than the rival's lap on worn rubber, often by a second or more. Your rival, still circulating on old tyres, can't respond for a lap. When they finally pit and rejoin, that chunk of time you banked on the out-lap can be enough to come out ahead. You never touched them on track; you simply used newer tyres for one lap longer than they did.

The undercut is deadliest when three things line up: high tyre degradation (so the fresh- tyre advantage is large), a short pit loss (so the stop is cheap to make), and a rival whose out-lap will be compromised. Its great enemy is the slow out-lap — cold tyres and cold brakes mean the first lap out of the pits is rarely a driver's best, and if you can't fire the tyres up quickly the whole move evaporates. This is why teams obsess over tyre warm-up, and why a driver who bins the out-lap throws away a stop that looked golden on the pit wall.

How does the overcut work?

The overcut is the patient move, and the opposite bet: you stay out while your rival pits first. It works when your tyres still have life and, crucially, when the car ahead rejoins into traffic or onto tyres that take time to switch on. While the rival is nursing cold rubber on their out-lap, you bang in two or three quick laps in clear air, build a cushion, and when you finally stop you emerge in front.

Overcuts tend to win at low-degradation circuits where old tyres aren't dropping off much, where track position is precious because passing is hard, or where warming the tyres is genuinely difficult (cool conditions, low-energy layouts). The risk is symmetrical to the undercut's: stay out one lap too long, hit your own cliff, and you hand back everything you were trying to protect.

Why do safety cars change everything?

A Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car slashes pit loss. With the whole field slowed, the time you lose transiting the pit lane shrinks dramatically — a stop that normally costs ~24 seconds might cost half that under a full Safety Car. That's why the order can be turned upside down the instant one is deployed: a driver who hasn't stopped yet suddenly gets a near-free pit stop, while a driver who pitted the lap before is left cursing their timing.

The flip side is double-stacking — a team pitting both its cars on the same lap, one right behind the other. It saves a Safety Car opportunity for both drivers, but the second car has to wait for the first to be released, so it loses extra time and can drop into traffic. Teams do it when the alternative — leaving one car out — is worse.

How do you spot an undercut coming?

The signal is in the numbers a lap or two before it happens. Watch the interval between two battling cars, the age and compound of their tyres, and the trend in their lap times. When the chasing car is within roughly a pit-loss-worth of gap-per-lap of catching a degradation window — and their tyres are only a few laps older — the pit wall is doing the undercut sum right then. If the car behind suddenly dives into the pits with the leader still out, you're watching the move begin; the answer arrives one lap later when the leader responds.
