How to Read F1 Telemetry
Anyone can see that one driver is faster. Telemetry tells you where, and why. Learn to read the traces and a lap stops being a single number and becomes a story — a late brake here, a hesitant throttle there, three tenths found and lost across a single sector.

The single most important habit: plot telemetry against track distance, not elapsed time. Plotted against distance, every corner lines up at the same point on the x-axis for both drivers, so you can compare like for like — this braking zone, that apex, this exit. Plotted against time, a faster lap slides out of alignment and the comparison turns to mush. F1 Live Data plots against distance around the lap for exactly this reason; the corner markers down the axis tell you which part of the circuit you're looking at.
What does the speed trace tell you?
The speed trace is where most of the story lives. Read it corner by corner:
- Braking point — where the line drops off its straight-line peak. A line that stays high for longer is braking later. Later isn't automatically better, though; brake too late and you carry the mistake all the way through the corner.
- Minimum speed — the bottom of the dip, at the apex. Higher minimum speed means more mid-corner commitment, usually the sign of a car with more grip or a driver willing to lean on it.
- Where the trace turns back up — the point of getting back to power. Earlier and steeper means a better exit, which compounds all the way down the following straight into a higher top speed. Corner exits are where the biggest, cheapest lap time usually hides.
A classic pattern: Driver A brakes later and shows a higher minimum speed, so they "win" the corner entry — but Driver B gets back to full throttle a few metres earlier and arrives faster at the next braking zone. Two different styles, and only the trace shows you the trade.
What do the throttle and brake traces reveal?
Throttle and brake expose technique. Look for the overlap. A driver easing off the brake while gently picking up the throttle — the two traces crossing smoothly rather than one snapping to zero before the other starts — is a driver in rhythm. The specific skills worth spotting:
- Trail braking
- The brake trace bleeding down gradually into the corner rather than releasing all at once. The driver is trailing off the brake as they turn in, keeping weight on the front axle for grip. A long, tapering brake release is the signature of a confident entry.
- Throttle application
- How the throttle trace comes back up on exit. A clean, progressive ramp means the driver is feeding the power in as grip returns; a jagged, stuttering trace means they're fighting the car — correcting a slide, or catching wheelspin.
- Lifts and coasting
- A small dip in throttle mid-straight with no braking is usually deliberate — lifting to save fuel or manage energy, not a mistake. Context tells you which.
How do you use the lap delta?
The delta is the running time difference between two laps, and it's the fastest way to find where time actually moved. Read as a line across the lap, it rises where one driver is losing time and falls where they're gaining. A step up through a single braking zone says "this is where the tenths went" far more precisely than a lap time ever could. The trick is to pair it with the traces above: the delta tells you where, the speed and throttle traces tell you why.
The most useful comparison is often a driver against their own earlier lap — a fresh-tyre lap versus a worn one, or a first Q3 run versus the second. The car is the same, so the delta isolates what changed: the tyre, the fuel, or the driver.
A quick worked example
Suppose two drivers are within a tenth over a lap, and the delta is flat until a medium-speed corner where it steps in one driver's favour and never comes back. Pull up the speed trace at that corner. If the faster driver shows a higher minimum speed, they simply carried more through the middle. If the minimums match but the faster driver's trace climbs earlier on exit, the time came from getting to power sooner — and you'd expect their top speed at the end of the next straight to be a touch higher too. Same gap on paper, two completely different explanations, and the traces settle it in seconds.
